Aims, activities and expected outcomes

GenomePT is a distributed genome sequencing and analysis infrastructure. Its main objectives are: i) promote the participation of Portuguese scientists in national and international genome projects and ii) develop clinical, environmental and agrifood genomics, biotechnology and green chemistry projects. GenomePT congregates researchers and technical personnel, and important bioinformatics expertise that are dispersed across a wide geographical area of the national territory.

Genome sequencing and analysis is fueling a major revolution in biological, biomedical, environmental, agricultural and marine sciences, with visible impact on biotechnology and green chemistry, management of natural resources and health. Some members of. GenomePT will promote new genome sequencing projects involving national and international partners, the national health service, food, pharma, biotech, paper, wine and fishing industries. By building the research capacity and aligning our research strategy with Regional, National and European development priorities for the 2014-2020 period GenomePT will make tangible contributions to regional development, the national economy and fixation of highly qualified human resources in the North, Centro, Lisboa and Algarve regions of Portugal. GenomePT will provide access to a wide range of services, including whole genome sequencing (DNA-Seq), exome sequencing, targeted DNA sequencing, genome bisulfite sequencing (methyl-seq), whole transcriptome sequencing, (RNA-seq), metagenome sequencing, DNA microarrays, microRNA microarrays and cytogenetics arrays (array-CGH).
